Healthy Ageing
Community Green Mindsets acknowledges the duty of care young people have towards older adults in our cultural context, the gender implications and the influence this duty has on the economic outcomes of young people. We are aware of the need for young people to invest in the process of ageing, being the generation of youth likely to Kenya's largest cohort of elderly persons.
We therefore work with youth already providing care, largely girls and young women, to strengthen their economic outcomes. Skilling them to provide quality care and support, redistributing unpaid care work, and promoting options that strengthen elder autonomy and self-support. Lastly, we work with the elderly to help them stay connected to the community through volunteering, storytelling, and sharing experiences and indigenous knowledge.
Thus, CGM takes this role to prepare young people for ageing and supports them to create an enabling environment for elderly persons to receive care. Therefore, this thematic objective targets the unique needs of older adults, integrating environmental, social, and health supports to enable active, dignified lives amid changing climates and demographics.
CGM conducts the following activities in our ageing program:
Life cycle health and wellness needs education.
Livelihood strengthening for elderly care providers.
Experience sharing and storytelling sessions.
Community Geriatric Holistic Wellness (Medical) and referral Camps.
Expected Outcomes
Improved economic outcomes of unpaid care workers who are young females through alternative income generation.
Increase in senior participation in community activities and elderly wellness programs improves their quality of life.
Improvement in elder WHO well-being scores for mental health.
